definitely the first time in my life that 3 books in a row use the 'n' word. i do like a book about race and about standing up to white people, but overall this book was disappointing. i didn't really like the writing, and i especially didn't like the main character. i don't need to like a protagonist to like a book (although it does help) but i do think that's helpful in a story with a moral and a lesson. or if not likable, then at least sympathetic, so we can understand his perspective, and then understand this lesson that is taught/learned. i found him so unlikable that anyone in the story that liked him became questionable of character, which took away from the story and from the point. more importantly, it just seemed like the characters and the writing were undeveloped and not entirely consistent.that said, sweet redemption in the last 30 pages, which is why it gets 3 stars.
