i'll start out with something positive - this was just the kind of book that i needed right now. unfortunately, the kind of book i needed was just something that was mindless and had no grand purpose, because i couldn't have possibly focused on anything with real meaning or subtext. this book, although written slightly better than i expected (something else positive!), was not about anything. there was no point at all to it, no meaning in the story whatsoever. 537 pages with no meaning or purpose, i can't abide that. at least it was basically harmless, excepting the heteronormativity that annoyed me. (it's found everywhere, but it seemed a bit more egregious in this book; maybe it's my mood.)
